Bromelain in JointBrex: 16.7 mg of a Pineapple Stem Enzyme

Quick answer

JointBrex lists 16.7 mg of bromelain, an enzyme from pineapple stem, per 2-capsule serving. The Arthritis Foundation's guide gives 500 to 2,000 mg per dose, three doses daily, which makes one serving roughly 3% of the smallest single dose. NCCIH reports no osteoarthritis evidence. Skip it with a pineapple allergy, and ask first on blood thinners or tetracycline antibiotics.

What is bromelain, and where does it come from?

Bromelain is an enzyme the pineapple plant makes (NCCIH, Bromelain: Usefulness and Safety). On the JointBrex panel it reads "Bromelain (Ananas comosus) (stem)", 16.7 mg per 2-capsule serving, which names the stem as its source.

It is promoted for osteoarthritis among other uses, yet NCCIH reports no osteoarthritis evidence. Much of the research on bromelain is small or tested it blended with other ingredients.

  1. The cut end. This is where the fruit joined the plant. The label lists the stem as the bromelain source, not the sweet flesh.
  2. The fruit. Brand art. The capsule lists the enzyme by weight, 16.7 mg, and does not list pineapple fruit.
  3. Allergy note. Because bromelain comes from pineapple, the Arthritis Foundation tells people with a pineapple allergy to stay away from it.

What do the JointBrex pages say about bromelain?

They do not agree. The sales page describes "An enzyme extracted from pineapple with strong anti-inflammatory action", the seller pack's ingredient list leaves bromelain out, and only the bottle label gives an amount.

The pineapple part is right. The strength claim has no study behind it on the page, and NCCIH reports no osteoarthritis evidence for bromelain.

No report is shown. NCCIH lists stomach upset and diarrhea for bromelain, and allergic reactions are on record.

The Federal Trade Commission expects health claims to rest on human trials of a comparable dose and formulation (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). A 16.7 mg line cannot borrow results from doses that start at 500 mg.

Shopping elsewhere? We found no listing by the brand on Amazon or Walmart, and some affiliate pages describe a different JointBrex formula altogether. A listing there could be a reseller or another product, so read its panel for the bromelain line and the crayfish allergen before you buy.

Bromelain dosage: how does 16.7 mg compare?

It is a small fraction. The Arthritis Foundation's guide gives single doses of 500 to 2,000 mg, repeated three times daily between meals, while a JointBrex serving holds 16.7 mg (Arthritis Foundation, Supplement and Herb Guide for Arthritis Symptoms).

Put another way, a whole bottle delivers about as much bromelain as one low single dose. The 6-bottle pack, a half-year supply, adds up to roughly two low days.

Timing differs as well. The guide lists doses between meals, while the JointBrex label says two capsules before a meal. For this product, follow the label and do not add capsules to chase a bigger number.

Price tells the same story. On the 6-bottle pack you pay about $1.63 a day for the whole formula, and bromelain accounts for 16.7 of its 1,400.1 mg, a little over 1% of the weight.

Does bromelain help joint pain?

Our sources do not show that it does. NCCIH lists no osteoarthritis findings for bromelain at all, and Memorial Sloan Kettering calls the data on arthritis pain mixed (Memorial Sloan Kettering, Bromelain (About Herbs)).

Part of the problem is design. Many bromelain studies tested it in combination products, so its own effect cannot be pulled apart from the rest, and none we found used an amount near 16.7 mg.

Side effects

Taken by mouth, bromelain seems well tolerated. Stomach upset and diarrhea are the complaints NCCIH sees most, and allergic reactions have been reported.

Who should not take the bromelain in JointBrex?

People allergic to pineapple should skip it, and so should anyone allergic to shellfish, since the same capsule contains crayfish. People on blood thinners or tetracycline antibiotics need a clinician's view first.

What the label already rules out

Some limits apply before bromelain even comes up. The label says the capsules are not for anyone under 18 or for pregnant or nursing mothers, and it asks people who take a medication or have a medical condition to consult a physician first. It also says not to use a bottle whose safety seal is damaged or missing.

Planning a procedure? Bromelain also blocks platelet clumping in lab tests. With surgery or a dental procedure ahead, tell the team about every supplement you take.

Is bromelain a reason to choose JointBrex?

No. At about 3% of one low dose, the bromelain brings a pineapple allergy flag and a bleeding caution more than a working amount.

MSM sits at the same 16.7 mg; see the MSM page. The full panel is on the supplement facts page, the JointBrex ingredients page sets all eight amounts side by side, and every interaction is gathered on the side effects page.

Bromelain in JointBrex: common questions

What is bromelain?

It is an enzyme found in pineapple plants. In JointBrex the label shows 16.7 mg, sourced from the stem, per 2-capsule serving.

Is the bromelain in JointBrex from the fruit or the stem?

The stem. The label reads "Bromelain (Ananas comosus) (stem)"; it does not say how the enzyme was extracted or who supplied it.

Can I take JointBrex if I am allergic to pineapple?

Not without an allergist's advice. The Arthritis Foundation says to avoid bromelain with a pineapple allergy, and allergic reactions to bromelain have been reported.

How many JointBrex servings equal one 500 mg bromelain dose?

About 30 servings, which is a full 60-capsule bottle. The Arthritis Foundation's range starts at 500 mg per dose and runs to 2,000 mg, three doses a day.

Does bromelain interact with Eliquis or warfarin?

It may. The Arthritis Foundation says bromelain can strengthen the effect of blood thinners, and lab and animal work hints at more bleeding with warfarin; our sources do not name apixaban (Eliquis), so ask the clinician who manages it.

Can bromelain affect antibiotics?

Memorial Sloan Kettering says bromelain can push up the amount of tetracycline antibiotics in blood and urine. Tell the prescriber you take JointBrex if you are given one.

Should bromelain be taken with food or between meals?

The Arthritis Foundation lists bromelain doses between meals. The JointBrex label says two capsules daily before a meal, so follow the label for this product.

Is there enough bromelain in JointBrex to matter?

No study we found tested an amount this small. A whole 30-day bottle holds about 501 mg, close to one low single dose in the Arthritis Foundation guide.

Why is bromelain missing from some JointBrex ingredient lists?

The seller pack's list names six ingredients and drops bromelain and MSM, and the sales page gives no amounts at all. The bottle label shows all eight, with bromelain at 16.7 mg.
