Chondroitin Sulfate in JointBrex: How Much You Get, Where It Comes From, What to Watch
Quick answer
Two JointBrex capsules give 100 mg of chondroitin sulfate. Studies used 600 to 1,200 mg a day, and the GAIT trial used 1,200 mg, twelve times more. The label does not name the source animal. Side effects in trials were mild, but ask first if you take blood thinners or NSAIDs or have a sulfa allergy.
How much chondroitin per day? 100 mg in the capsule, 600 to 1,200 mg in studies
Two JointBrex capsules give 100 mg of chondroitin sulfate. The sources we checked put a usual daily amount at 600 to 1,200 mg, so the label supplies between one-twelfth and one-sixth of that range.
- 100 mg
JointBrex, the full daily serving
Two capsules, about 7% of the 1,400.1 mg the panel lists.
- 200 mg
One LiverTox single dose, low end
LiverTox gives 200 to 400 mg, three times a day (LiverTox (NIDDK), Glucosamine).
- 600 mg
LiverTox daily total, low end
Six times what the label provides.
- 1,200 mg
GAIT daily dose
Given for 24 weeks in the largest US trial (NEJM 2006, Clegg et al., GAIT trial). Twelve times the label.
Matching GAIT with this product would take 12 servings, which means 24 capsules and 12,000 mg of glucosamine along with it. The label says not to exceed 2 capsules, so this is a gap to know about, not one to close. The Arthritis Foundation lists 500 mg to 3 g a day, but that range is for combined glucosamine and chondroitin products (Arthritis Foundation, Supplement and Herb Guide for Arthritis Symptoms).
What animal is the JointBrex chondroitin made from?
The label does not say. It prints "Chondroitin Sulfate 100 mg" with no source, and the only allergen line, crustacean shellfish (crayfish), is tied to the glucosamine.

The Arthritis Foundation notes that chondroitin is usually taken from cow, pig or shellfish cartilage. That leaves three groups without an answer:
- Vegetarians and vegans, though the crayfish glucosamine already rules the product out for them
- People who avoid pork or beef for religious reasons
- Anyone who wants to know every animal source before buying

Does chondroitin work for joints? What 43 trials and GAIT found
A small, short-term pain benefit at most, from studies that were mostly low quality. Where a dose is stated, it is far above the 100 mg in JointBrex.
| Source | What it looked at | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Cochrane 2015 (Cochrane 2015, Chondroitin for osteoarthritis) | 43 trials, about 9,110 people, mostly knees | Slight pain relief under 6 months, about 10 points on a 0 to 100 scale; unsure beyond that |
| GAIT, 2006 | 1,200 mg a day for 24 weeks, 1,583 adults | Not significantly better than placebo |
| NCCIH on a 2018 analysis (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin for Osteoarthritis) | 29 studies, 6,120 people | Chondroitin alone eased knee pain; paired with glucosamine it did not |
| NCCIH on a hand trial | 162 people, 6 months | Less hand pain |
| 2019 ACR/AF guideline (Arthritis Rheumatol 2020, Kolasinski et al., 2019 ACR/AF OA guideline (abstract)) | Hand, hip and knee osteoarthritis | Conditional yes for the hand only |
For the knee and hip, a family medicine summary reports that the guideline panel strongly advised against chondroitin (Am Fam Physician 2020, Barry, summary of the ACR OA guideline). No source we found reports a result for 100 mg a day.
Does chondroitin rebuild cartilage, as the JointBrex sales page suggests?
No study we found shows that. The sales page gives chondroitin a hydrating, rebuilding role; the research describes a structural effect that is uncertain and, where measured, very small.

Works together with glucosamine to retain water inside the cartilage, keeping it hydrated and elastic

Cochrane's 0.18 mm difference was measured over two years. NCCIH adds that benefits to joint structure may be too small to matter to patients.
Chondroitin side effects: what to check before you start
Trial side effects were mild and uncommon. In the Cochrane review, serious adverse events were actually rarer on chondroitin than on placebo, 3 against 6 per 100 people. The checks below are about other medicines and allergies.
- Blood thinners and NSAIDs. The Arthritis Foundation says chondroitin with either may raise bleeding risk, and NCCIH links glucosamine and chondroitin to more bleeding on warfarin.
- Sulfa drug allergy. The Arthritis Foundation advises caution with a sulfonamide allergy.
- Pregnancy and nursing. NCCIH says little is known, and the label rules both out.
- Shellfish. Whatever the chondroitin source, the capsule holds crayfish glucosamine.
Chondroitin safety check
Do you take warfarin, another blood thinner, or an NSAID such as naproxen most days?
Has a sulfa antibiotic or other sulfonamide drug ever given you a reaction?
Are you pregnant, nursing, or under 18?
Do shrimp, crab, lobster or crayfish cause you an allergic reaction?
Answer every question to see your result. Nothing is saved or sent.
None of these flags apply. Keep to the label: 2 capsules a day before a meal.
Speak with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, and take the whole label with you.
JointBrex is not for you. The label excludes pregnancy, nursing and under-18s, and the capsule contains crayfish.
Ingredient-by-ingredient warnings are collected on the JointBrex side effects page.
Why does JointBrex pair 100 mg of chondroitin with 1,000 mg of glucosamine?
The brand does not explain it. The ratio in JointBrex is 10 to 1, while GAIT tested 1,500 mg of glucosamine with 1,200 mg of chondroitin, close to an even split, and that full-strength pair still did not beat placebo overall.
Our reading of the panel: two capsules hold 1,400.1 mg in total, so a GAIT-sized 1,200 mg of chondroitin would leave room for little else. By weight, chondroitin is about 7% of a serving, roughly 12¢ of a $1.63 day on the 6-bottle pack.
The partner ingredient has its own page on glucosamine sulfate and the 1,000 mg question, and every amount sits side by side on the JointBrex ingredients list.
Chondroitin in JointBrex: questions people ask
Is 100 mg of chondroitin a typical dose?
No. Typical daily amounts in our sources are 600 to 1,200 mg, so 100 mg is one-sixth to one-twelfth of that.
How much chondroitin should I take for osteoarthritis?
GAIT used 1,200 mg a day and LiverTox lists 600 to 1,200 mg. JointBrex gives 100 mg; ask your clinician what suits you.
What animal is chondroitin made from?
Usually cow, pig or shellfish cartilage, the Arthritis Foundation notes. The JointBrex label does not name its source.
Can chondroitin cause bleeding?
It may add to bleeding risk with blood thinners or NSAIDs, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Ask your prescriber first.
Is chondroitin safe with a sulfa allergy?
The Arthritis Foundation advises caution with a sulfonamide allergy. Talk to your doctor before starting.
Does chondroitin work better for hands than knees?
The guideline's only positive call is a conditional one for hand osteoarthritis. For knees, the best trials showed no clear pain effect.
Why is there so little chondroitin in JointBrex?
The brand gives no reason. Two capsules hold 1,400.1 mg in all, so a 1,200 mg study dose would leave room for little else.
How long does chondroitin take to work?
No source gives a start date. Cochrane found a slight pain benefit in the short term, under 6 months; its summary does not state doses.
