MSM in JointBrex: A Sulfur Compound at 16.7 mg a Day

Quick answer

One 2-capsule serving of JointBrex carries 16.7 mg of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a sulfur compound. People typically take 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily, which puts a serving under 2% of the bottom figure; two whole bottles add up to about one low day. MSM research is limited, and the Arthritis Foundation warns against pairing it with blood thinners.

What is MSM?

MSM is short for methylsulfonylmethane, a sulfur-containing compound that is also sold on its own as a supplement. In JointBrex it appears at 16.7 mg per 2-capsule serving, roughly 1.2% of everything the panel lists.

Small amounts of MSM occur naturally in foods. The capsule's MSM is a supplement form, and the joint research behind it used grams a day, which is where every comparison on this page comes from.

Is MSM in JointBrex? Three ingredient lists disagree

Yes, the bottle label includes it. The mix-up comes from the seller pack, whose ingredient list skips MSM, while the sales page names MSM but gives no amount.

  1. The MSM row. "MSM (Methylsulfonlmethane) 16.7 mg". The chemical name is missing a letter, but the amount is clear.
  2. 16.7 mg, no Daily Value. The same weight as quercetin, methionine and bromelain, which makes 66.8 mg for the four rows together. The dagger means no daily target exists for MSM, so the panel gives no percentage.
  3. Other ingredients. Cellulose capsule and rice flour, then "Contains: Crustacean shellfish (crayfish)". The shellfish is the source of the glucosamine, not of the MSM.

When lists disagree, we go by the bottle. A store listing with a different ingredient set may be a different formula; check it against the panel on our supplement facts page.

MSM dosage for joints: how far is 16.7 mg from typical use?

Very far. Daily use usually falls between 1,000 and 3,000 mg, which leaves one serving under 2% of the bottom figure (Arthritis Foundation, Supplement and Herb Guide for Arthritis Symptoms).

How the MSM adds up over a pack

  1. Day 1

    16.7 mg

One serving, the full daily amount on the label.

  2. Day 30

    About 501 mg

The first bottle is empty, and the total is still about half of one low day.

  3. Day 60

    About 1,000 mg

Two bottles in, the running total equals one day at the low end of typical use.

  4. Day 180

    About 3,000 mg

A whole 6-bottle pack equals a single day at the top of typical use.

The gap cannot be closed with more capsules. The label says not to exceed the dose, and every extra capsule would also add crayfish-sourced glucosamine and seven other ingredients.

Does MSM work for joints? What the research shows

The evidence is thin even at full doses. According to the Arthritis Foundation, nobody has run a large, well-controlled human study of MSM, and an NCCIH digest calls the research very limited, with uncertain benefit for osteoarthritis (NCCIH Clinical Digest, Arthritis and Complementary Health Approaches).

A 2017 review by Butawan and colleagues lists pain and stiffness gains in several joint trials. The same review also reports a study where gains were only marginal, plus an MSM and boswellic acid combination that failed to beat placebo. Its authors say the right dose and time course are still being worked out.

Funding is worth knowing here. One author works for an MSM maker, Bergstrom Nutrition, and a co-author has done consulting work in the supplement industry; both ties are disclosed. None of this research came close to 16.7 mg, so there is no study to quote for the MSM in JointBrex.

Does MSM help collagen, as the sales page says?

No source we use supports that. The sales page calls MSM "A natural source of sulfur" and "an essential mineral for collagen and connective tissue production", yet the studies we found measured pain and stiffness, not collagen.

What are MSM side effects, and is it safe with blood thinners?

At 16.7 mg, MSM is unlikely to be the ingredient that causes trouble. Possible effects named by NCCIH are rashes, other allergic reactions and an upset stomach; the 2017 review found MSM was tolerated well at daily doses as high as 4 g.

That review also cites a safety notice that puts the safe limit at under 4,845.6 mg daily. One serving is about 0.34% of that figure.

Blood thinners. The Arthritis Foundation's advice is to avoid MSM if you take a blood thinner. Glucosamine, chondroitin, turmeric, boswellia, bromelain and quercetin carry bleeding or blood thinner cautions in our sources too. If you take warfarin, Eliquis or a similar drug, ask the clinician who manages it first; our sources discuss blood thinners in general, not apixaban by name.
Shellfish allergy. The label says the capsule contains crustacean shellfish (crayfish). That rules it out for shellfish allergy, whatever you think of the MSM.

Should MSM affect your decision about JointBrex?

Probably not. At this size the MSM line works more like a name on the list than a working dose, so judge the formula by its larger ingredients.

The biggest is glucosamine sulfate at 1,000 mg, covered on the glucosamine page. Bromelain shares the 16.7 mg amount; see the bromelain page, and compare all eight on the JointBrex ingredients page.

MSM in JointBrex: what people ask

What is MSM, in plain words?

It stands for methylsulfonylmethane, a compound that contains sulfur. Each 2-capsule JointBrex serving has 16.7 mg.

Is MSM found in food?

Yes, small amounts of MSM occur naturally in foods. The MSM in JointBrex is a supplement form, and at 16.7 mg a serving the amount is tiny.

Why does one JointBrex ingredient list leave out MSM?

The seller pack names six ingredients and skips MSM and bromelain. The bottle label lists all eight, MSM included at 16.7 mg, and the label is the list to trust.

How many JointBrex servings equal one typical MSM dose?

About 60 servings, two full bottles, add up to 1,000 mg, the bottom of the usual daily range. A whole 6-bottle pack holds about 3,000 mg, one day at the top of that range.

Does the MSM in JointBrex cause side effects?

Unlikely at 16.7 mg. At studied doses, the possible side effects NCCIH lists are allergic reactions, digestive upset and rashes.

Is MSM safe with warfarin or other blood thinners?

The Arthritis Foundation says not to combine MSM with blood thinners. Ask the clinician who manages yours, since six other JointBrex ingredients carry bleeding cautions too.

Does MSM build collagen?

None of the sources we use shows that. The sales page ties MSM to collagen, but the MSM studies we found measured joint pain and stiffness at gram doses.

Should I take extra JointBrex capsules to get more MSM?

No. The label says not to exceed the recommended dose, and doubling up would also double the glucosamine, which comes from shellfish.
